PH specialty coffee gets the spotlight at national coffee tilt

<div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2020/life/03/12/1.jpg"/><figcaption>The Philippine National Coffee Competition held at SM Megamall. <em>Jeeves de Veyra</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>MANILA -- It was Philippine specialty coffee’s time to shine at the 2020 Philippine National Coffee Competition held from March 9 to 11 at the SM Megamall Fashion Hall.</p><p>While past champions chose high-grade specialty coffee from Africa and South America for their barista routines, The Giving Café’s Adrian Vocalan used Itogon coffee from Benguet to brew his way to the 2020 National Barista Championship. </p><p>The fruity medium roast harvested from the former mining town one hour north of Baguio was used in Vocalan’s espresso, milk course, and signature drink to clinch the win.</p><p>Aside from the National Barista Competition, the three-day event also saw Joe Marie Lichangco of the UCC Coffee Academy froth and pour his way into a third consecutive National Latte Art Championship.</p><p>Cebu-based Gio Visitacion from The Good Cup Coffee Company squeezed a win in a tight contest for the Brewers Cup with his anaerobic natural-processed Gesha from the Ninety Plus Gesha Estates, Panama.</p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2020/life/03/12/2.jpg"/><figcaption>(From left) Latte art champion Joe Marie Lichangco, Barista champion Adrian Vocalan, and Brewers Cup Gio Visitacion. <em>Jeeves de Veyra</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>Lichangco will compete at the World Latte Art Championships to be held in Warsaw, Poland, while Vocalan and Visitacion will be heading for Melbourne, Australia to compete at the World Barista Championship and the World Brewer’s Cup to be held at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo in May.</p><p>Aside from the competitions, the Philippine National Coffee Competition was a haven for coffeephiles. </p><p>A brew bar where guests could sample coffee from purveyors from all over the country was set up featuring coffee from Manila-based roasters like Bana’s Coffee, Conlins, Commune, Henry &amp; Sons, Jack and The First Crack, and Jay’s Way. </p><p>Not to be outdone, H Proper Coffee Roasters from Cagayan De Oro City, and The Good Cup Company from Cebu showed off its own specialty coffee to perk up the proceedings.</p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2020/life/03/12/3.jpg"/><figcaption>The Brew Bar featured roasters and coffee purveyors from all over the country. <em>Jeeves de Veyra</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>Various talks were also given by business and technical experts in the local coffee scene. </p><p>In observance of Women’s Month, the PNCC concluded with a special panel featuring prominent women in the coffee industry moderated by Commune’s Rosario Juan.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><iframe height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Mi8fUPUQEUQ?enablejsapi=1" width="560"></iframe></figure><div class="iwantbar">Watch more in <a href="//www.iwantv.com.ph/">iWantv</a> or <a href="//tfc.tv/">TFC.tv</a></div>
