Ivory Santo Niño, Napoleon III-style cabinet highlight Casa de Memoria's year 2 auction

Nino. <em>Handout</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>MANILA -- Casa de Memoria, the Makati auction house largely dedicated to European furniture and objet d’arts, is embarking on its 11th auction this May 5 in its Jupiter Street showroom. Close to 200 pieces will be up for grabs from neoclassical chairs to crockery and silverware, from pocket watches to porcelain dining ware, even sketches by Filipino painter Romeo Tabuena. </p><p>Among the furnishings, of note are the Napoleon III-style pier cabinet. Its finish includes a handmade diamond pattern with reliefs—in the style of Boulle marquetry—that machines would be hard pressed to replicate.The piece, with a black top for that elegant flourish, remains functionally stable and in mint condition. A working lock comes with a key.</p><p>There is also a Hispano-Filipino ivory sculpture depicting the Santo Niño Peregrino: a creole boy with thick, brown, carved hair, smooth-flowing drapes, facial features such as deep set eyes and a red, smiling mouth at the base of a Hispanic nose. </p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2018/life/05/02/x2.jpg?ext=.jpg"/><figcaption>Napoleon III cornucopias. <em>Handout</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>Along with this is a pair of Napoleon III-style cornucopia glassworks built on an ormolu base with winged femmes decked by guilloche, floral, and acanthus motifs.</p><p>The two vases will be sold separately but brings an elegant touch to one’s quarters when paired: an ecru-toned nouveau vase with an orange, floral motif adorning a stable, bulky body with a hexagonal lip. </p><p>Complementing this is another piece dating to the 20th century art nouveau style with darker orange and red tones, evoking a temperate dusk, also in a floral motif. Both lots, marked, are attributed to the glass artist Emile Gallé.</p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2018/life/05/02/x3.jpg?ext=.jpg"/><figcaption>Galle vases. <em>Handout</em></figcaption></figure></div><p>An ivory diptych ball depicting scenes of horsemen, dated to 19th century France, should give flair to an otherwise nondescript executive’s corner. The images are hinged at one end, the whole lot encased in a geometric-carved surface. </p><p>Completing this is a 3.5 x 8.5 noblewoman ivory sculpture with a triptych representing indoor religious scenes.</p><p>Casa de Memoria employs a team of dedicated researchers and restoration specialists headed by creative director Miguel Rosales. The team continuously digs into the tangible and intangible details of each lot that goes up on auction. The emphasis of Casa’s pieces are not so much on their aesthetic contribution to one’s home, as on the provenance and heritage each lot represents.</p><p>Before each auction, lots are secured through a flurry of tests, gauging silver and gold purity, period and art-school lineage, as well as background checks on consigners to ensure that all lots meet legal requirements.
