MANILA (UPDATED) -- “Ang Huling El Bimbo,” based on the hits of iconic OPM band Eraserheads, has garnered 7 million views online in 48 hours.

In a Facebook post, producer Full House Theater Company thanked all those who watched the musical in the limited time that it was streaming online.

“Maraming salamat sa lahat ng aming nakasama—sa 7 Million na nanood, sa mga nagpuyat, nakitawa, naki-iyak, nag-essay writing, nag-like, nag-comment, nag-share, at higit sa lahat, nag-donate! Sana kahit paano ay nabigyan namin kayo ng ligaya sa panahong ito,” the statement said.

This was the first time the whole of "Ang Huling El Bimbo" was put up online for free. Before this, the musical had more than 100 runs at Resorts World Manila's Newport Performing Arts Theater.

The fundraising campaign of offering the show online for two days straight was in partnership with ABS-CBN, for the benefit of the families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

While its online run is already over, people can still donate until the close of business hours on May 15 (Manila time).

The overwhelming response to it, said director and choreographer Dexter Martinez Santos, gave him hope for the future of theater after the pandemic, a topic of discussion among those involved in the industry given the expected "new normal" that could include physical distancing measures.

"During this crisis, theatre was supposed to be on a lockdown. But YOU have breathed life to 'Ang Huling El Bimbo: The Musical' and kept it alive online. From the bottom of my heart, walang hanggang pasasalamat po," Santos said.

As the show closed last night, Santos said his “heart is full because I know that when this pandemic ends, artists will storm to the rehearsal halls to create Filipino stories that need to be told and mount original Filipino works that haven’t been explored.”

"Because no matter what, THE FILIPINO AUDIENCE WILL BE THERE WAITING , EAGER TO SUPPORT PHILIPPINE THEATRE."

"Ang Huling El Bimbo" is an original attempt at telling a tragic story that is relevant, insightful and at times provocative -- one that also serves as a tribute to the timelessness of the band's discography.

Furthermore, it blends together elements of a musical and a rock concert.
