Review: 'Wonder Woman' is best DC superhero movie yet

If Wonder Woman was a stock, this would be a &quot;buy.&quot; After a savage response to the last 3 DC movies, the DC Cinematic Universe finally gets it right.&quot;Wonder Woman,&quot; directed by Patty Jenkins from a script by Allan Heinberg, is a terrific addition to the DC canon - the best since Christopher Nolan&#x27;s &quot;The Dark Knight.&quot;It&#x27;s got humor and heart, and the cinematic pairing of Gal Gadot and Chris Pine is dynamite. &quot;Wonder Woman&quot; is an origin movie through and through with some interesting things to say about the nature of war, but it&#x27;s the emotional core of the characters that lassoes you in. You don&#x27;t need the Lasso of Hestia to tell the truth: you will love this film.<figure class="op-interactive"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameBorder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/1Q8fG0TtVAY" width="560"></iframe></figure>The best thing about the movie is Wonder Woman herself. Gadot plays Wonder Woman who is innocent, headstrong and still very relatable. She can stop bullets with her armbands, climb stone walls with her bare hands, and even kick down buildings, but she&#x27;s also a woman who picks utility over fashion, gushes over ice cream and coos over babies.Credits also to director Patty Jenkins for a refreshing lack of male gaze in this movie. While Themyscira is filled with beautiful women, none are given lingering body shots - no women jumping rope in slow-mo. What we get are strong, agile women training hard, hands ready for war. Also refreshing is a lack of lecherous backtalk - the closest we get is a male sidekick trying to give Diana a hug and getting rebuffed. Instead, we get the female gaze - after a naughty bit with Steve Trevor getting out of a pool in the nude.Also creditable is that the story does not turn Wonder Woman into a Mary Sue. Diana may be the embodiment of female perfection but she comes off as somewhat clueless and even naive in her first mission into the world of men. Also to its credit: it does not blame World War I on the machinations of the main supervillain Ares. Wonder Woman may be trained for war but her ultimate goal is peace: killing the bad guy is too simplistic a solution for war, and the movie wisely shows that.The movie becomes a somewhat uneven mess in the middle because of some uninteresting characters and the end is a CGI mess but the first half is solid - akin to Richard Donner&#x27;s first &quot;Superman&quot; movie but with Wonder Woman as Superman/Clark Kent and Chris Pine/Steve Trevor as the uhm, damsel in distress. How Diana looks at Captain Kirk like an interesting, if somewhat lesser, ally and how that gaze turns to something akin to respect is what people will likely remember. It&#x27;s a comic book love story but it hits just the right grace notes that doesn&#x27;t make it feel forced.Gadot is endearing as the naive but super strong Diana of Themyscira but it&#x27;s her pairing with the remarkably snark-free and selfless Captain Kirk that gives this a pulse. When Wonder Woman says: &quot;I believe in love&quot; - you expect a theme song to come in. For now though, that rock intro will have to do.Filled with wonder and hope, &quot;Wonder Woman&quot; is the best DC superhero movie to date.Marvel, you have been warned. Now, on to Justice League.
