Nagtagisan ng galing sa pagbuo ng robots ang mga estudyanteng kalahok sa preliminaries ng 20th International Robot Olympiad at karamihan sa mga gawa nila ay nais masolusyunan ang problema sa kalikasan.

Ilan lamang dito ay mga machine na nangongolekta ng basura sa dagat at imbensiyon na nag-aabsorb ng init ng araw para hindi mamatay ang mga maliliit na pawikan.

"International Robot Olympiad on it's 20th year will be [held] for the first time in the Philippines...The creations are always new and it always fascinates me to see students as young as 8 [years old] able to come up with something like this," paghanga ni Anthony Gabitan, presidente ng Data Science & Technology Corporation.

Ang tema ng olympiad ngayong taon ay "save the seas."

Ang grupo nina Roberto Tan at dalawa pang kasamahan mula Isabela, pambato sa prelims ang machine na nangongolekta ng basura.

"We hope that our robot can help save Boracay 'coz it was once a beautiful tourism spot but now it's closed because of the garbage," giit ni Tan.

Nanalo naman sa junior creatives category sina Enrico Abella at mga kasamahan dahil hindi lang nangongolekta ng basura ang kanilang imbensiyon, kundi sinisipsip din nito ang langis sa dagat.

"Here we have our undersea mechanic. This is the camera to detect the trash. The robot moves forward by the propeller. So the trash goes here to this little box. And then for the oil, we have this. It's a bell type oil skimmer," paliwanag ni Abella.

Naging highlight din ang "sumo-bot" competition kung saan ala-sumo wrestling ang labanan ng mga robot.

"I love creating robots because it's a time where I can bond with my siblings and a time where I can open my imagination and use it," pagmamalaki ni Bjorn Escalona na nanalo sa sumo-bot competition.

Sa darating na International Robot Olympiad sa Disyembre, mabibigyan ng pagkakataon ang mga nanalo sa preliminaries na maipakita sa mundo ang galing ng Pinoy sa larangan ng robotics.
