MANILA -- The Department of Tourism (DOT) wants the next Miss Earth international pageant to be held in Davao City, the hometown of the newly elected President Rodrigo Duterte.

DOT chief Wanda Teo met with reigning Miss Earth Angelia Ong and organizer Lorraine Shuck Wednesday afternoon to discuss details about the proposal to hold the month-long pageant for the first time in Mindanao.

The only times the Manila-based pageant was held outside the Philippine capital were in 2008 (Pampanga), 2009 (Boracay), 2010 (Vietnam), and 2015 (Austria).

The next Miss Earth, now on its 16th edition, is scheduled on October 15, and will forward environmental protection as its main advocacy.

Should it push through, the pageant may prove controversial following President Duterte's recent assertion that he will not honor commitments to reduce the country's carbon emissions by 70 percent by the year 2030. (FULL STORY: Duterte says he won't honor pact to cut carbon emissions)

It may also be the first time the pageant will do away with a swimsuit competition as Shuck promises to respect Davao City's ordinance dictating a "no swimsuit" policy for beauty contests held in the city.

Imelda Schweighart, 21, is set to compete for an unprecedented third straight Miss Earth crown for the pageant-crazy nation.

An aspiring actress from Puerto Princesa City, Schweighart has called on President Duterte to ban genetically modified food as she was crowned Miss Philippines-Earth last month.

The Philippines has won the Miss Earth crown thrice, including back-to-back wins from Ong last year and Jamie Herrell in 2014.

The country is also billed as the frontrunner to host the next Miss Universe. (LOOK: Pia Wurtzbach meets President Duterte)
