Art critic Alice Guillermo passes away

MANILA – Art critic and esteemed University of the Philippines (UP) professor Alice Guillermo passed away on Sunday after a lingering illness. She was 80 years old.

Tributes poured in for Guillermo, who is survived by her poet and essayist husband, Gelacio, and their two children.

Born on January 6, 1938 in Quiapo, Manila, Guillermo took her bachelor's degree in Education at the College of Holy Ghost., graduating magna cum laude in 1957.

She obtained her master’s degree in UP and served as a professor at the university’s Art studies department.

Guillermo has written numerous reviews and articles for magazines like Archipelago, Observer, Who, WE Forum, Business Day, and New Progressive Review, as well as a number of books.

Her essay, “Ang Kaisipang Filipino Batay sa Sining Biswal,” won in the Palanca Awards in 1979. She also won the Art Criticism Award from the Art Association of the Philippines in 1976.
