Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News</figcaption></figure></div>MANILA – Many Filipinos think that bringing up the topic of careers to children during their elementary years is too early.But Henry Motte-Muñoz, founder and chief executive officer of the online portal Edukasyon.ph, begs to differ.Citing research, he said parents, guardians, and teachers should start having career conversations with children at the age of 7 or 8 to help them avoid job mismatch or unemployment in the future.“It’s not because you want everyone to know at age 7 or 8 what these children want to do when they’re 22, but because discovering one’s calling is not a two-minute or 10-minute conversation,” noted Motte-Muñoz, who helps empower students to get relevant education to prepare them for employment via Edukasyon.ph.“It’s not a pop quiz or a multiple-choice answer exam you can play on the Internet,” he continued, addressing attendees of KidZania Manila’s first “The Role We Play” forum. “It’s actually a result of conversations you have with your parents, with your peers, with your teachers, or conversation online that helps you discover what you like.”Motte-Muñoz went on to stress the importance of the role of adults in helping children explore their career options.“We want children to start thinking about what their future would look like. If we could get adults to think about it in those terms, and stop thinking of, ‘I need to get an education’ versus ‘I have an end-game, I have a destination I need to get to,’ they would get the right kind of education to help them achieve their dreams,” he said.“A lack of information is not the issue per se. It’s the lack of curated information. It’s lack of advice, lack of experiences. That is what is stopping people from making informed choices.”A nationwide labor <a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/focus/multimedia/infographic/06/06/18/which-jobs-have-many-and-few-applicants">survey</a> conducted from January 2015 to June 2016 showed occupational shortages and surpluses in the Philippines.Jobs with surpluses of applicants include mining engineers, paramedical practitioners, policy administration professionals, financial and investment advisers, financial analysts, environmental engineers, systems administrators, biologists and related professionals, computer network professionals, personnel and career professionals, and software developers.On the other hand, shortages of applicants were seen in the following occupations: specialist medical practitioners, midwifery professionals, generalist medical practitioners, physiotherapists, landscape architects, physicists and astronomers, archivists and curators, nursing professionals, vocational education teachers, and economists.
