Far Eastern University welcomed the third leg of "The Happinews Project" in its university-wide activity day on September 27. The administration building was filled with cheers as the participants lined up for the activities and photo booths.

Happinews ambassador Gretchen Ho, and FEU student and ABS-CBN voice talent Alan Moya moderated the program as five motivational speakers shared their perspective on how to spread positivity on social media.

The speakers were: Dr. Maria Theresa Oba-Del Rosario, a psychology professor in FEU Manila; John Kebyn Villarino, certified internal auditor and internal audit instructor of FEU Manila; Robert G. Labayen, Head of Creative Communications Management of ABS-CBN; Dan Bercasio, Head of Operations of Gawad Kalinga; and Alex Gonzaga, actress, host, and online influencer.

Dr. Del Rosario talked about the "Power of Positive" as she enumerated the tangible effects of seeing the positive in different situations. "Happiness could also mean being satisfied despite the problems and limitations," she said.

She added: "There is a positive correlation between happiness and random acts of kindness... The best source of happiness is when you do an act of kindness to others."

The professor said that happiness can be drawn, for example, from visiting the elderly or orphans, or from recycling or donating to charity.

Meanwhile, Villarino encouraged the audience to see "kindness all around" to appreciate life more. To illustrate this, Villarino related how he failed to achieve his short-term goals a couple of times, but ultimately managed to become more than what he expected.

Villarino, a consistent honor student, had to juggle school and work while maintaining an average of 1.25 in his freshman year. However, his second semester’s GWA was .01 short. This did not stop him from being the accountant that he is now. He stopped schooling for a year and took several odd jobs — as a cashier, bagger, waiter — working 18 hours a day in order to save.

Fast-forward to his senior year in the university, he graduated cum laude, and subsequently passed the licensing examination, making him a certified internal auditor. Villarino was invited to teach in the same university he credited for molding him, making him one of the college’s young professors. Despite the hardships Villarino has been through, he achieved his dream not only through hard work, but by seeing the kindness of the people around him.

For his part, Bercasio, the head of operations of Gawad Kalinga, shared inspiring stories of people who have been part of the organization.

“Walang natatalo sa nagmamahal,” Bercasio said, referring to those who value helping others, even if it means less time for their family and self. This, according to him, is a deeper and meaningful act of nationalism.

Bercasio also talked about how "bayanihan" can help spread happiness. “Kahit kayang gawing mag-isa, pilitin niyong may isamang iba,” he said of volunteering in charitable acts, pointing out coming together adds more meaning to the helping others.

Alex Gonzaga on Posting Happy

Gonzaga, a recent awardee of YouTube’s golden buzzer, had all eyes on her as she talked about “Posting Happy.” Gonzaga started off with her do’s and don’ts on social media.
1. Do not validate yourself on social media.
2. Do not compare on social media.
3. Do not rant on social media.
4. Do not take social media seriously.

According to the actress, millennials tend to be overly affected by social media. Gonzaga urged the students to see things positively and share happy thoughts and happenings. "Reality is what you see around you, not what you see in your cellphone," she said.

She emphasized that it is still best to have alone time to reflect on what is happening around oneself, than to constantly post about their experiences online.
