Pinoy film 'Nuuk' to open this year's Danish Film Festival

<div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2019/life/10/08/nuuk.jpg"/></figure></div><p>MANILA --- For the first time, a Filipino film will be screened in the Danish Film Festival, now on its fifth year at the Shangri-La Plaza Red Carpet Cinema.</p><p>While this year’s line-up shows the strength and variety of the Danish film culture, a Filipino film shot in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, takes centerstage in the festival. Direct by Veronica Velasco, the psycho-thriller “Nuuk” takes places in the northernmost part of the Kingdom of Denmark.</p><p>The opening of the festival on Wednesday, October 9, will screen “Nuuk,” starring award-winning actor Aga Muhlach and Alice Dixson, with Ularneq Fleischer. The film is produced by three studios – Mavx Productions, Viva Films and OctoArts Films. Muhlach himself is one of the executive producers of “Nuuk,” with Vic del Rosario, Jr. and Erwin Blanco. </p><p>Dixson plays Elaiza Svendsen, a Filipino immigrant in Nuuk who struggles to survive after the recent death of her husband. She gets abandoned by her son, Karl (Fleischer), that’s why she tries to cope with life using alcohol and drugs.</p><p>Elaiza’s life changes when she meets Mark Alvarez (Muhlach), a fellow Filipino trying to fight loneliness and living by his lonesome in the city. The two initially try to find love in the cold and isolated place of Nuuk. However, when everything seems to be going well, Mark disappears without a trace and the conflict begins, leading to a life-shattering mystery.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><iframe height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/aYIQcIwGMWE?enablejsapi=1" width="560"></iframe></figure><div class="iwantbar">Watch more in <a href="//www.iwantv.com.ph/">iWantv</a> or <a href="//tfc.tv/">TFC.tv</a></div><p>“Nuuk” offers a new cinematic experience as the first Filipino film to be shot in Greenland. The story of Elaiza and Mark is a Nordic noir genre and “Nuuk” is destined to break more boundaries to give the audience a one-of-a-kind sub-zero love affair.</p><p>“The festival truly bears testimony to the cultural diplomacy through film in a globalized world,” said Grete Sillasen, Ambassador of Denmark to the Philippines. “We are showing these films to show the culture of Denmark through film.”</p><p>The selection and screening of the films are made possible by the Embassy of Denmark in Manila, the Danish Film Institute, Shangri-La Red Carpet and the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP). All screenings are free and done on a first-come, first-served basis.</p><p>“Nuuk” along with nine, full-length Danish Films, will be shown for the first time in the Philippines. Among the Danish films to watch out for is Carl Th. Dreyer’s “Ordet (The Word),” a legendary film by one of the greatest directors in cinema history, as regarded by filmmakers and critics.</p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="https://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2019/life/10/08/fortunate.jpg"/></figure></div><p>Also in the line-up is the Bille August’s “A Fortunate Man” (2018), directed by the Oscar winner and two-time Palme d’Or awardee. His 1987 film, “Pelle the Conqueror,” won the Academy Award, Palme d’Or and the Golden Globe trophies.</p><p>Meanwhile, the other Danish films to be screened are Brigitte Starmose’s “Darling” (2017), Jonas Elmer’s “I Am William” (2017), Milad Alami’s “The Charmer” (2017), Nicolo Donato’s “Across the Waters” (2016), Annika Berg’s “Team Hurricane” (2017), Jannik Hastrup’s “Circleen, Coco and the Wild Rhinoceros” (2018) and Jesper W. Nielsen’s “The Day Will Come” (2016).</p>
