KISOLON, BUKIDNON - Instead of having reading sessions inside the classroom, students of the Kisolon Central Elementary School can do it outdoor.

Using reading materials from the cart they call "Kariton ng Karunungan," some students help their classmates who read slowly.

One of the little teachers, Grade 1 pupil Mikaela Lim, helped her classmate Michael improve his reading skill.

Meanwhile, Grade 5 pupil Aiza Neri is grateful that his buddy classmate Radar Carampil is teaching her to read.

The project, called "Kariton ng Karunungan," is spearheaded by Supreme Pupil Government of the school with the help of their teachers.

"Almost 1/4 of the population of Kisolon Central Elementary School belongs to non-readers and very slow readers," said Rechel Castino Adora, reading coordinator of the school.

The school has a population of more than 2,000 and all of them are target recipients of the project.

Teacher Noviema Perigrino, adviser of the Pupil Government, said the project is inspired by Efren Peñaflorida, who is known for his advocacy in helping out-of-school youth with his kariton library.

She also believes that outdoor reading will capture interest of students.

"From 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM in the afternoon, they are inside the classroom to bring the pupils to another different learning venue having them outside would of course interest them to learn more," said Noviema Perigrino.

The Kariton currently still lacks wheels but the school aims to complete this through donors.

In every classroom, teachers have assigned "little teachers" who will help them in teaching slow and non-reader students.
