MANILA – Lea Salonga is excited to be doing a musical in the Philippines again six years after she played Grizabella in “Cats.”

Salonga is set to play Helen Bechdel, an English teacher and a former actress, in the Manila production of the Tony Award-winning musical “Fun Home.”

The musical will open at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza in Makati on Thursday and will run until November 27.

“In terms of Filipino fans per se, I do concerts regularly and I’m on TV a lot. There really is no shortage of my presence in front of an audience. However, in a musical, the last one that I did here was 'Cats' in 2010. It’s not the happy musical that they decided to put me in but it’s a wonderful show,” she said.

For Salonga, her role in "Fun Home" is probably the most "real" among the many characters that she has played.

“She was in a book but she was based on an actual human being that only died a few years ago. She was an artist, she was an actress and she put her artistic life aside to raise a family, and then there’s everything that comes with it and what she and her family go through. It’s incredibly real,” she said.

Hoping that Filipino audiences will also be able to relate to the show’s characters, Salonga said: “It’s nice to be able to have the opportunity to do a piece like this. To be able to bring someone like this to life, and hope that whoever is watching will find something that they are able to relate to, or that it reminds them of somebody, that will make it hit home even more.”

“Fun Home” was the most awarded and acclaimed musical of 2015 winning five Tony Awards including Best Musical. It is based on Alison Bechdel's best-selling graphic memoir and features music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by Lisa Kron.

Aside from Salonga, the play will also feature Eric Kunze, who has starred in Broadway productions such as “Les Miserables,” “Miss Saigon” and “Damn Yankees” among others.

Cris Villonco will also be part of the show playing the central role of Alison. Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante will play Medium Alison and Katie Bradshaw and Andee Achocoso alternate as Small Alison.

Also in the cast are Yanah Laurel, Ronan Crisologo, Daniel Drilon, Noel Comia, Albert Silos and Laurence Mossman.
