Miss Possibilities: Confident, beautiful, with lots of heart

<p>MANILA -- The Miss Possibilities pageant on Saturday at the Henry Lee Irwin Theater in Ateneo was the epitomé of what Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach declared back in 2015 in the international pageant - that to be a winner, a contestant does not only have to be beautiful but should be brimming with confidence and carrying a big heart.</p><p>This pageant of young women with special needs showed the full house crowd there was no lacking in all three. It showed that a pageant can be both entertaining and bring smiles to the audience without bikinis and the full regalia of a beauty contest.</p><p>All 12 contestants paraded on stage without the inhibitions that children with disabilities are hampered with. Instead, they wowed the crowd as they performed their talents in full confidence.</p><p>Sure some of them showed a little hesitance at first, like when Marie Carl Pineda ran towards her foster parent and would only continue if he would join her on stage. But when she got started, nothing would stop her as he proceeded to do her routine, including three costume changes on stage.</p><p>Many sang their favorite tunes while some danced with them, including two contestants doing &quot;Let It Go&quot; from the movie &quot;Frozen,&quot; which was a favorite among the children; and &quot;Baby Shark,&quot; where everybody in the room nodded to the beat. But all contestants were just obviously enjoying what they do best when they are with their families at home. And that is to make us happy and remind us that life does not have to be complicated to enjoy it.</p><p>Winston Maxino, father of Brina Maxino who received an award for her achievements not only locally but internationally as a Special Olympics envoy, said it best when he encouraged everyone to keep on supporting people with special needs. &quot;It takes a village to raise a child,&quot; he said. And that meant everybody, not only the family members, but the whole society should accord people with special needs the same love they give people without disabilities, if not more.</p><p>Indeed, it was not only the contestants that walked away with a smile in their hearts that night, it was all of us who experienced joy from unconditional love.</p><div class="media-content"><div
