BBG Entertainment on Thursday released “Boulder Dash: 40th Anniversary Edition,”bringing the classic 1980s game to modern platforms with new levels, features and a retro look. The game is available for PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Windows and Mac, with a Nintendo Switch launch scheduled for Aug. 28 in North America and Sept. 4 in Europe.

First released in 1984 by Peter Liepa with Chris Gray, ‘Boulder Dash” quickly became a home-computer favorite and has inspired numerous sequels over the past four decades. The original combined arcade action with puzzle strategy, tasking players with digging through caves, collecting diamonds and dodging falling boulders.

The “40th Anniversary Edition” includes 60 remastered levels from the first three ‘Boulder Dash” titles, 180 new levels across six original worlds, and three fan-designed stages created by longtime community members. New elements such as acid-eating rocks, enemy generators and surprise eggs have been added to expand the gameplay.

Players can choose from three characters inspired by the game’s early designs, while a level editor allows fans to create and share caves or try out countless user-generated creations. The package also features the original Boulder Dash I, II and III in both Atari and Commodore 64 formats, alongside an all-new soundtrack by acclaimed German composer Chris Huelsbeck.
