MANILA – A Filipino chef has been making waves in New York for serving a donut that literally drips in wealth.

Bjorn Dela Cruz of Manila Social Club in Williamsburg, Brooklyn has created the Golden Cristal Ube Donut, which is covered with 24-karat gold.

The donut is filled with ube mousse and champagne jelly, and has icing made with Cristal champagne.

It costs $100.

In an interview with the food blog First We Eat, Dela Cruz shared the story behind the Golden Cristal Ube Donut.

“We have this donut program were we make donuts every Friday, and you can only order them online on Thursday. The reason why we do this is because we’re not a donut shop. The Golden Cristal Ube Donut came along because there is a brewery in Bushwick called Braven Brewery, and we know the owners Marshall and Erik. We both started our businesses around the same time. We had a donut event where I unveiled a donut with icing made with Braven White IPA, dusted with gold. That was the beginning of the golden donut [idea].

“The reason that gold leaf and Cristal were added was because I love all different champagnes. I wanted to add something [to the menu] for the new year to celebrate how long we have been going. I didn’t know people would go and order a dozen [of these] at a time! But then again, it’s New York, and there are people willing to put down a grand for a dozen donuts,” he said.

As more people order his Golden Cristal Ube Donuts, Dela Cruz said they plan to offer it throughout the year.

“I take pride in this, and to me it’s a piece of art. The Golden Cristal Ube Donut was originally created for the holidays and I wanted something special. There has been enough interest that we will continue to create this donut throughout the year,” he said.

Before the Golden Cristal Ube Donut, Manila Social Club is known for its Ube Bae Donuts, which are always sold out. Other popular dishes here include Longganisa Duck Lumpia, Panko-Crusted French Toast, Tocino and Eggs and Torta Talong.

Dela Cruz said he is happy to combine simple and fancy ingredients to create unique Filipino dishes.

“This is a great thing about Filipino food. It’s never had these ingredients before. I make this rice porridge called Arroz Caldo – it’s like comfort food. There has never been an Arroz Caldo dish with truffles. But truffles go so well with chicken and so well with rice. Filipino food has always tasted good but it’s never been pretty. Now, we’re making it a little bit prettier and also tasting good,” he said.
