MANILA -- Green Day fans will get to rock to 9Works Theatrical’s production of “American Idiot,” which will have its Philippine premiere at the new Globe Iconic Store at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

Backed by the discography of Green Day, this musical features renditions of punk anthems, ”21 Guns” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends” to tell the story of teens Johnny, Will And Tunny.

The story is set in American suburbia during the post-911 era characterized by disillusionment, war, drugs and broken relationships, and how these three teens find redemption through love, dreams, change, healing and hope.

The eclectic cast is led by bona fide rock stars Wolfgang lead vocalist Basti Artadi, former Rivermaya frontman and "The Voice of the Philippines" Jason Fernandez and Chicosci lead vocalist Miggy Chavez.

They are joined by musical theater veterans Nel Gomez, Yanah Laurel, Alex Godinez and Ela Lisondra.

"American Idiot" marks the the start of a long-term collaboration between Globe Telecom and 9 Works Theatrical.

“We’ve looked at other theater companies in Manila. 9Works Theatrical is the edgiest,” said Globe Head of Stores and Retail Transformation Joe Caliro.

Not only is Globe Telecoms credited as a co-producer, “American Idiot” will also be the first production to be staged at the Globe Iconic Store near the Bonifacio High Street Central Ampitheater.

The concept is “accidental theater,” with the rock musical staged outdoors, so passers-by can actually watch the play from a distance. There will only be 600 paid seats. The producers’ vision is for passers-by to stumble in this production, and let the music and sets draw them into the theater.

The producers were very hush-hush about the set design. When pressed about what would make this production kinetic, “American Idiot” director Robbie Guevara coyly said, “Parkour,” hinting that the cast had to train to move around the set.

'American Idiot' will have performances on June 24, 25, 26, July 1, 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10 at 8 p.m. at Globe Iconic Store, Bonifacio High Street Amphitheater, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.
