Here's why Iza Calzado agreed to star in straight play 'Tiny Beautiful Things'

<p>MANILA—Actress Iza Calzado is starring in her first-ever straight play &quot;Tiny Beautiful Things: A Play About Life in Letters&quot; from The Sandbox Collective.</p><p>On Thursday during a media conference, Calzado and her co-actors performed a snippet of the upcoming play, which was based on the book by Cheryl Strayed.</p><script data-wid="auto" type="text/javascript" src="https://content.viralize.tv/display/?zid=AAEyze-tm4MR6kEa&amp;cid=ABOIDUCRV19gu756&amp;activation=click&amp;vip_mode=playing&amp;vip_position=bottom-right"></script><p>In the play, Calzado plays Sugar, an advice columnist who gets letters from people asking advice on life.</p><p>In an interview with ABS-CBN News and other members of media, Calzado said the play was offered to her a year ago by Toff de Venecia.</p><p>&quot;I just felt that it&#x27;s so important that people understand that we all go through the same things, maybe not same things but quite similar. ...Para siyang rollercoaster talaga -- buhay. Minsan makaka-relate ka, minsan hindi mo pinagdaanan pero gets mo pa rin. Parang naiintindihan mo &#x27;yung pinagdadaanan ng mga tao dahil sa pagkakasulat ni Cheryl Strayed, said Calzado, who did the stage musical &quot;Sabel: Love and Passion,&quot;back in 2015.</p><p>&quot;Naisip ko rin ang daming pwedeng matulungan ng materyal na ito. True enough &#x27;yung cast namin kapag binibigyan ng libro &#x27;yung friends nila sinasabi nila nakakatulong. ...It&#x27;s a very important theme that we tackle here which is loss, love, loss again, grief. It feels like especially after the pandemic we also experienced some level of loss and some of it we are experiencing it &#x27;di ba? And that&#x27;s part of life. And that&#x27;s why I think it&#x27;s important because it can be a tool for healing,&quot; the actress added.</p><script data-wid="auto" type="text/javascript" src="https://content.viralize.tv/display/?zid=AAEyze-tm4MR6kEa&amp;cid=ABOIEDgkSJAicy91&amp;activation=click&amp;vip_mode=playing&amp;vip_position=bottom-right"></script><p>Calzado said that doing the play is a dream come true for her.</p><p>&quot;Mayroon akong part na gustong mag-&#x27;Lovingly Yours Helen&#x27; at &#x27;MMK&#x27; noong araw pa na magbigay ng, alam mo &#x27;yung advice column na ikaw &#x27;yung &#x27;Dear Ate Iza&#x27; ganoon. So parang this is the closest,&quot; she said.</p><p>Calzado also shared the importance of doing theater as an actor.</p><p>&quot;Grabe ang sarap-sarap po bawat rehearsal. And this is also why I think it&#x27;s very important for actors to do a theater. There are young actors or actors that have never done theater, if you&#x27;ve never done it, please try it now because it&#x27;s so inspiring to learn so much from each other,&quot; Calzado said.</p><p>&quot;Tingnan niyo naman ang cast walang tapon, tapos &#x27;yung director award-winning. Iba talaga, the process is so different without belittling television or film which is not given as much time. So with this you have time, you have room to play, you have time. But it&#x27;s so much fun.
