Looking for a local summer destination but can't stand the usual tourist traps?

Philippine Tour Operators Association trustee Fe Abling Yu said she recommends the following 5 destinations for being safe, quiet and budget-friendly.

1. Dumaguete - Yu ticks off several advantages that make Dumaguete a top tourist spot for the weary traveler: there are many airlines that fly to Dumaguete, lots of waterfalls to stave off the summer heat, and it is the perfect jump-off point to go dolphin watching, see whalesharks in Oslob, visit Apo Island or even go swimming in Siquijor.

2. Isabela de Basilan - The capital of Basilan, Isabela City boasts of the Malamawi Beach, considered one of the best beaches in the Philippines. Tourists can also take a dip at Bulingan Falls, take a cruise through the mangrove forest and try Sama and Tausug cuisine at the Marang-Marang Floating Cottages.

3. Marinduque - Here's one unique thing about Marinduque, they have butterflies all year round. Yu said there are many tourist spots in Marinduque including the Boac Cathedral, Tres Reyes Marine Sanctuary, Paadjao Falls and more.

4. Liloan - Situated just 30 minutes away from Cebu City, Liloan has everything for the tranquil traveler - sights, a golf course, and lots of fishing spots.

5. Morong, Bataan - A 3-4-hour drive from Manila, Morong has lots to offer including historical sites, a waterpark, beach resorts and the Pawikan Conservation Center.

Yu, meanwhile, said the top 3 international travel destinations for Filipinos this summer are Hokkaido, Japan, Vietnam and Taiwan.
