MANILA -- Property giant Megaworld is building a museum in Mactan, Cebu.

In a statement released Thursday, Megaworld said the Mactan World Museum will retell the story of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and his defeat against Philippine hero Lapu-Lapu.

The museum will also tackle the Manila galleon trade and feature collections, artifacts, replicas, mementos, and interactive virtual displays on key historical events between the Philippines and Spain. 

The museum also promises visitors an immersive audio-visual experience of Spanish colonial regime in the Philippines.

The museum will also have two performance halls -- a Flamenco Studio and a Multimedia Room -- where guests can watch performances of Spanish dances or short plays.

The museum hosts several other activities rooted in Filipino-Spanish traditions and culture, such as a seasonal bazaar showcasing Cebu’s main delicacies, a guitar-making and retail area, and a self-operated Filipino-themed photo studio.

The P1.2-billion project will rise in Megaworld's The Mactan Newtown township in Lapu-Lapu City, across the 8 Newtown Boulevard residential condominium.

It will be curated by Alliance of Greater Manila Museums, Inc. president Dannie Alvarez, who used to lead the Committee on Museums of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

The Mactan World Museum is the fourth museum property Megaworld is building inside its townships, after the Chinatown Museum in Lucky Chinatown, the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Brandy Museum in Iloilo Business Park. 

Megaworld hopes the Mactan World Museum will open in the next three years.
