MANILA -- At the closing show of its latest restaging of the rock musical "Rent" Sunday night, 9 Works Theatrical announced its upcoming production of the coming-of-age musical "Once on This Island."

To be directed by Robbie Guevara with scenography by Mio Infante, "Once on This Island" with book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty is based on the 1985 novel "My Love, My Love or The Peasant Girl" by Rosa Guy. A Caribbean-set retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Little Mermaid," it is about a peasant girl in the French Antilles who falls in love with a rich boy and makes a deal with the gods to save his life.

In 2017, Lea Salonga portrayed one of the gods Erzulie in the Broadway revival that opened on December 3, 2017, at the Circle in the Square Theatre. The production was showered with critical acclaim, and won the 2018 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.

"Once on This Island" has been staged several times by various local theater companies through the years including Actor's Actors Inc. in 2005 and Repertory Philippines in 1995.
