However, it is also common for heterosexuals, especially men, to get the same virus. AIDS can be prevented by early treatment and diagnosis of HIV. Unfortunately, there is no cure for HIV/AIDS, but people with HIV can live long, productive lives with early detection and adequate antiretroviral treatment. </p><p><strong>ETYMOLOGY:</strong> The term AIDS was coined in the early 1980s.
