<p>Not all heroes wear capes.</p><p>The non-academic staff of University of Santo Tomas (UST) Faculty of Arts and Letters proved this to be true as they marched proudly during the solemn investiture rites at the university’s Quadricentennial Pavilion on Monday, June 9.</p><p>The non-teaching staff includes the maintenance and security personnel, who work tirelessly behind the scenes.</p><div><br/></div><div><iframe class="instagram-media instagram-media-rendered" id="instagram-embed-11" src="https://www.instagram.com/p/DKqQNG5yPpH/embed/captioned/?cr=1&amp;v=14&amp;wp=594&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fod2-workbench-web.abs-cbn.com&amp;rp=%2F#%7B%22ci%22%3A11%2C%22os%22%3A22886947.19999981%2C%22ls%22%3A3519020.1999998093%2C%22le%22%3A3519024%7D" allowtransparency="true" allowfullscreen="" frameBorder="0" height="756" data-instgrm-payload-id="instagram-media-payload-11" scrolling="no" style="background:white;max-width:540px;width:calc(100% - 2px);border-radius:3px;border:1px solid rgb(219, 219, 219);box-shadow:none;display:block;margin:0px 0px 12px;min-width:326px;padding:0px"></iframe></div><script async="" src="//www.instagram.com/embed.js"></script><div><br/></div><p>Christopher Cayetano, who has been a maintenance staff member for 15 years, said in an interview with The Flame that he appreciates the initiative of the college as he now feels that they are part of the family included in the celebration. </p><p>“Importante sa amin &#x27;yun kasi parang hindi lang kami janitor, kumbaga parang kasamahan niyo rin kami… na parte rin kami ng UST (It&#x27;s important to us because it feels like we&#x27;re not just janitors, it feels like we&#x27;re your colleagues too... that we&#x27;re also part of UST),” Cayetano said.</p><p>Meanwhile, Joseph Conrad Mamaril, who has been a maintenance staff since 2020, congratulated the new graduates from UST and hopes they can find good careers soon.</p><p>“Sa kasiyahan nila parang masaya rin kami (When they are happy, we feel happy too),” Mamaril said.</p><p>The same recognition of the non-teaching staff went viral on social media last year and will become an annual tradition at the college’s graduation ceremonies.</p><p>Roann Quinton, a security guard, recalled how surprised she felt last year when the dean of the college first messaged her and the other personnel that they would take part in the graduation rites.</p><p>“Sobrang happy lalo na nung naglalakad na po kami papuntang stage. Parang mixed emotion po na nakakaiyak na nakakatuwa sobra (We were so happy, especially when we were walking towards the stage. It was like a mixed emotion that made us cry and delighted at the same time),” Quinton told The Flame.</p><p>This initiative is a way of honoring and recognizing the silent strength of the unsung heroes whose efforts often go unnoticed.</p>
