But what if you could walk through the very streets imagined by our national hero? What if the fictional world of “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo” became a living, breathing journey through Manila?That’s exactly what Renacimiento Manila aims to do with its immersive heritage tour “Lakad Pamana: Mundo nina Ibarra at Maria Clara.” Led by sociologist and cultural advocate Diego Gabriel Torres this walking tour lets participants experience the Manila that inspired Jose Rizal, both in fiction and in his own life.“Essentially, ito ay isang tour na pinupuntahan iyong mga lugar sa Maynila, sa Intramuros, Binondo at San Nicolas, na may connection o nabanggit sa mga novels ni Dr. Jose Rizal, iyong ‘Noli Me Tangere’ and ‘El Filibusterismo.’ Ginagawa namin ito as a way of honoring Dr. Jose Rizal,” Torres explained.<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/17502375540792025061810060_INTRA 2.jpg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" alt="Cultural advocate Diego Gabriel Torres leads the Renacimiento Manila tour. ABS-CBN News </div>The tour starts with a walk through Intramuros, passing by the former site of Ateneo de Manila, Rizal’s alma mater during his early years.“Iyong dating Ateneo de Manila o Ateneo Municipal na ngayon ay Foro de Intramuros na, doon nag-aral si Rizal dito sa Maynila, iyong parang high school days ay nandoon siya,” he said.But more than retracing Rizal’s footsteps, Lakad Pamana threads together the very world he created in his novels. Participants visit the convent of Santa Clara where Maria Clara sought refuge and later died; the estero beside Binondo believed to be the location of Kapitan Tiago’s house; and the Pansiteria Macanista de Buen Gusto, one of the few surviving landmarks mentioned in “El Filibusterismo.”“Doon nakatira (Santa Clara convent) si Maria Clara, doon naganap iyong suyuan sa azotea. ABS-CBN News </div>According to Torres, connecting fiction with physical space doesn’t just ignite the imagination; it deepens historical understanding.“Mahalaga iyong ganitong mga activities because it&#x27;s a way of connecting iyong mga nababasa natin doon sa actual na mga places sa Maynila. Nagkakaroon siya ng dagdag na halaga at saka ng dagdag na bigat,” said Torres.Renacimiento Manila offers these tours not only during Rizal’s birth and death anniversaries in June and December, but also during National Heritage Month in May.Each tour costs P600 and includes a souvenir packet.Another Rizal-themed walk titled “Ang Maynila ni Rizal” follows Rizal’s life more biographically, from Luneta, the site of his execution, to the old Ayuntamiento (City Hall) and Fort Santiago.Renacimiento Manila, which means &quot;Rebirth Manila,&quot; is an advocacy-driven cultural group devoted to preserving the city&#x27;s vanishing heritage. Their mission is not just nostalgia, it’s about civic identity. “If the city and the national government could just put enough attention to it, napakalaki ng magiging economic benefit ng mga ganitong mga locations, tourist sites. Hindi lang sa mga foreigners, kung hindi sa ating mga Pilipino, as a way of reinforcing iyong sense of pride and national identity natin,” Torres added.As the nation commemorates Independence Month and the birth of the country’s national hero Jose Rizal, Torres invites the public to walk through history not just in museums or books, but through the actual city streets that Rizal once knew.For those who have ever imagined walking alongside Ibarra or standing in the same azotea as Maria Clara, this isn’t just a tour, it’s a portal into the very soul of our literature and our nation.<div><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oom32IU7Xnk?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe> </div>
