Toots Tolentino</div>MANILA — Tanghalang Pilipino (TP), the resident theater company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, is set to open its 39th season with a trio of original Filipino musicals spotlighting the lives and legacies of national heroes Emilio Jacinto, Gregoria de Jesus, and Apolinario Mabini.With a season theme centered on transformation and nation-building, TP aims to continue igniting the revolutionary spirit through theater, education, and outreach programs. Each production draws inspiration from the ideals and sacrifices of historical figures who helped shape the country’s fight for justice and freedom.The season opens with the return of “Pingkian: Isang Musikal” from Sept. 12 to Oct. 12 at Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez in Pasay City. After a critically acclaimed, sold-out debut and a Best Musical win at the 2024 Aliw Awards, the musical returns to explore the life of Emilio Jacinto — known as the “Brains of the Katipunan” — and his journey as a young revolutionary navigating the final years of Spanish colonial rule and the rise of the Philippine-American War.From Nov. 14 to Dec. 14, TP presents “Gregoria Lakambini: A Pinay Pop Musical” in partnership with Flip Music Productions Inc. Told through the lens of a high-energy P-pop girl group, the musical traces Gregoria de Jesus’ transformation from a spirited young woman in Caloocan to the “Lakambini of the Katipunan.” Once a footnote in history, her voice takes center stage in this reimagined tribute to love and resistance.<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1752723491080CAST.jpg" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" alt="The leads of Tanghalang Pilipino&#x27;s upcoming musicals perform at a media launch on Wednesday. Toots Tolentino</div>Rounding out the season is the 10th anniversary staging of the multi-awarded “Mabining Mandirigma: A Steampunk Musical,” running from March 6 to 29, 2026. Originally staged in 2015, the musical tells the story of Apolinario Mabini, whose vision of principled leadership continues to resonate. The production won 12 Gawad Buhay Awards and returns with a new, more intimate direction.All performances will be held at Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez at the Cultural Center of the Philippines complex in Pasay City.
