MAKATI — Ayala Avenue’s weekly Car-Free Sundays program is expanding to include court sports, organizers said, as basketball and pickleball courts were added to the open-streets initiative this year.<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/17556798755862025.08 PHOTO_Car-Free Sundays (5).jpeg" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/>HandoutThe basketball activation debuted in June with the TITAN Summer Jam 3x3 Tournament, which drew 16 youth teams and 60 players ages 14 to 19. The event turned Ayala Avenue and the adjacent Ayala Triangle Gardens into a venue for games, warm-ups and community gatherings. Organizers said future editions may open additional age brackets to give more young people access to the sport. The 3x3 court will return on select Car-Free Sundays, with schedules to be announced in advance.</div>Pickleball, one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, was launched Aug. 10 as a regular feature of the program. Weekend regulars, sports enthusiasts and lifestyle influencers joined the inaugural games, including beauty queen Nicole Cordoves, Ms. Grand International 2016 first runner-up, and Ateneo Lady Eagles standout Dzi Gervacio. With its simple rules and low-impact, social gameplay, the sport was introduced to many first-timers and will now be available every Sunday.“Car-Free Sundays is about building a weekly habit of movement,” said Misha Quimpo, project development manager at Ayala Land. “By adding courts, we’re giving people more ways to be active, whether that’s a quick game with friends or trying a new sport for the first time.”<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/17556799173462025.08 PHOTO_Car-Free Sundays (1).jpg" style="width:450px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/>Handout</div>Organizers said the additions aim to make the program more inclusive, complementing existing activities like running and cycling with sports that are accessible to different ages and fitness levels.The new offerings come ahead of the second anniversary of Car-Free Sundays on Sept. 7, which will feature a fun run, expanded fitness activities and a photo exhibit highlighting regular participants.Launched in 2023, Car-Free Sundays transforms Ayala Avenue into a people-first corridor each week as part of Ayala Land’s efforts to promote health, wellness and community engagement in Makati.
