<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/175610012303443rd NBA.png" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div>MANILA — The National Book Development Board (NBDB) and the Filipino Critics Circle (FCC) are now accepting nominations for the 43rd National Book Awards, which honor outstanding books written and published in the Philippines.First presented in 1982 by the FCC, formerly the Manila Critics Circle, the awards have recognized excellence in Philippine publishing for more than four decades. In 2008, the group partnered with the NBDB to co-administer the annual prizes.“The National Book Awards not only rightfully honor the best works produced by our country’s finest minds and talents, they also provide an occasion for us to take stock of the zeitgeist, our writers’ current preoccupations, and where our book industry is headed,” NBDB executive director Charisse Aquino-Tugade said.The deadline for nominations is September 7. Eligible titles must have been published in 2024 by NBDB-registered authors or publishers. Submissions will be evaluated for their significance, quality of craft, readability, grammar, structure, and style.FCC chair Dean Francis Alfar said the awards serve as “official recognition of the quality and relevance of winning books,” noting that each year’s roster of winners “provides a curated list of the best contemporary writing, reflecting not just Filipino sensibilities, but also what concerns and hopes we have.”Awards will be given in both literary and non-literary divisions. Categories include novel, short fiction, nonfiction prose, anthology, drama and film, criticism, cultural studies, poetry, graphic novels, translation, art, professions, social sciences, history, journalism, sports, lifestyle, food, science, spirituality, theology, and philosophy.Each year, the NBA highlights a different regional language. For the 43rd edition, books published in Hiligaynon (Ilonggo) and Kiniray-a from 2022 to 2024 are eligible regardless of genre.Special citations include Best Book Design, which recognizes excellence in design and production, and Publisher of the Year, awarded to the publishing house with the most winners. Each winning title, except Publisher of the Year, carries a cash prize of P40,000.Nominations must be submitted online and accompanied by two printed copies and one watermarked PDF of the book. Translation entries must also include a copy of the original text. Finalists will be selected from each category, with one winner chosen in the final deliberation.
