<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1758078967103532058892_1200411955223887_882093438903199693_n.jpg" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div>MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Historical Association (PHA) will celebrate its 70th anniversary this week with an international conference on the writing and teaching of Southeast Asian history.The 2025 PHA Annual Conference, held in partnership with the International Council for Historical and Cultural Cooperation–Southeast Asia (ICHCC-SEA), is set for Sept. 18 to 20 at the National Library of the Philippines and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.This year’s theme, “Kasaysayan/Sejarah: Research and Teaching Southeast Asian Histories in the Face of New Historiographies,” highlights how recent scholarship has reshaped traditional narratives of the region.“The conference aims to determine the state of research and teaching of Southeast Asian histories within the region and identify recent trends in local, national and regional Southeast Asian historiographies,” said PHA Vice President and conference convenor Atoy Navarro.The opening ceremony will feature a keynote address from Dr. Ramon G. Guillermo, director of the Center for International Studies at the University of the Philippines Diliman. Plenary speakers include: Dr. Fernando A. Santiago Jr., director of the Southeast Asia Research Center and Hub at De La Salle University; Prof. Dr. Sapriya, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia; Dr. Nazirah Lee, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris in Malaysia; and Dr. Ahmad Jelani Halimi, Universiti Sains Malaysia.Other highlights include a lecture by former PHA president Dr. Celestina Boncan revisiting the group’s 1960 Southeast Asia conference, a panel on archival research with noted historians Ambeth Ocampo and Ma. Serena Diokno (pending confirmation), and parallel sessions for researchers and educators.A cultural night, “Saysay at Bayan,” will be staged at the National Museum of Natural History on Sept. 18 to honor the contributions of historians such as Encarnacion Alzona, Teodoro Agoncillo and Fr. Horacio de la Costa, SJ. The event is by invitation only.The conference will close with a guided tour of Intramuros and Fort Santiago led by historian Xiao Chua.Registration fees range from P2,500 for students to P4,000 for regular delegates, with discounts available for PHA members.
