The Department of Tourism (DOT) launched Wednesday its Start Up Challenge, which invites higher educational institutions to propose programs for possible funding and implementation.The annual competition is a joint project with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to advance the National Tourism Development Plan.&quot;We want this program to be sustainable and to also be institutionalized as far as our HEIs (higher educational institutions) are concerned, to continue that stream of exciting, innovative ideas from our schools and our students,&quot; DOT Secretary Christina Frasco said.The event, which was held in Intramuros, marked the opening of applications, which will run until October 31, 2025.Schools are tasked to form a group consisting of four Junior and Senior students who will submit a tourism-related proposal to their CHED regional office.“From infrastructure to digitalization to connectivity to maximization of our domestic destinations, so maraming spheres of proposals that can be accepted,&quot; Frasco said.The first-placers per province will vie for one slot within their region to be national finalists.Seventeen regional winners will then receive a P250,000 grant, which would be distributed through their schools.CHED chairperson Shirley Agrupis clarified that the prize is not a &quot;sure ticket for them to win the national,&quot; but it is given for the institutions to enhance the proposals based on criteria from the commission and the Department of Education. One winning proposal from Luzon, Vizayas, and Mindanao would be implemented with a funding of P5 million each.During the awarding ceremony, the three winning schools will sign a memorandum of agreement with the DOT, CHED, and Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority.The DOT and respective CHED regional offices will be responsible for overseeing the project implementation, while the schools are required to report on the expenditure of the prize money.
