Na Punoh Mohadji ya esconde maga bandido con de ila 53 cautivo que ta inclui maga estudiante, maestra y un padre.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>******</strong></div><div><br/></div><div><strong>Sampinit Complex: From terrorist&#x27;s haven to tourist destination </strong><strong><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1767499612181589241111_1419029516254789_7000906297089104215_n.jpg" style="width:633px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></strong>BASILAN -- What used to be a known terrorist stronghold in Basilan will soon be transformed into a tourist destination as the provincial government begins planting trees and preparing the area for an eco-tourism and agri-farm project. </div><p>Last November 29, Basilan Governor Mujiv Hataman led a group of community leaders and soldiers, in climbing Punoh Sampinit, the second highest peak in Basilan.</p><p>This mountain and its periphery, used to be a bailiwick of the dreaded Abu Sayyaf Group, wherein they have held captive hundreds of victims and beheaded some of them. </p><p>Hataman said the area was also used before by the Moro National Liberation Front and Moro Islamic Liberation Front to hide at times when the AFP intensified their operations against the armed groups.</p><p>Sampinit Complex lies in the center of the municipalities of Sumisip, Maluso and the City of Lamitan. </p><p>Hataman says Punoh Sampinit is now a symbol of peace. Recently, Hataman once again trekked the hills of Sampinit to plant over a thousand seedlings of narra and fruit-bearing trees, along with civil society members, government workers, youth and other stakeholders, as part of the culminating activity for the Mindanao Week of Peace. </p><p>Hataman recently signed Executive Order Sagip Kalikasan, identifying Punoh Sampinit among other areas, where they will champion environmental protection and preservation of its forest reserves. Apart from restoring the forest cover, the EO also aims to give alternative livelihood to residents involved in illegal logging activities. </p><p>Hataman says, ”Kahapon nag-submmit ng list of more than 100 na directly involved sa logging, from haulers to traders, land owners. We will engage them to develop and conceptualize alternative livelihood with the Labor Department na may allocation ng P1-million budget for Alternative Livelihood Program.&quot; T</p><p>he official admits there are still cut logs along the roadside of Sampinit during their last visit. The provincial government intends to utilize these logs into chairs and tables for Madrasahs or Islamic schools. </p><p>The PLGU is also coordinating with various sectors to study what best to plant in the area. &quot;Isa sa mga posibleng itanim ay arabica coffee kaya meron na kaming nursery na two weeks old pa lang,&quot; Hataman said. </p><p>The governor disclosed that they intend to climb Punoh Mohadji in Sumisip, next. Punoh Mohadji was the mountain where members of the media were allowed to interview Abu Sayyaf Group spokesperson Aldam Tilao alias Abu Sabaya in 2000. It is where they kept their 53 hostages, including students, teachers and a Claretian priest.</p>
