Global pop star and Grammy-winning artist Chappell Roan has been under fire for allegedly sending security to approach a mother and daughter for being &quot;disrespectful,&quot; after which she gave her side of the incident. This is not Roan&#x27;s first brush with controversy ; she has previously been chastised for &quot;ignoring fans,&quot; &quot;being cold to people asking for pictures,&quot; and &quot;telling paparazzi to stop.&quot; Roan, who has been labeled a “snob,” has been reminding the public not to normalize extreme fan behavior such as &quot;stalking, talking shit online, people won&#x27;t leave you alone, and yelling at you in public.&quot;<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1774397020168chappel.JPG" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/>Screen grab: Instagram/Chappell Roan<script async="" src="//www.instagram.com/embed.js"></script></div>So far, Roan&#x27;s message has been clear: respect stars&#x27; boundaries because they, too, are people. However, some pointed out that, while it is true that the public should respect celebrities&#x27; boundaries, Roan was also seen at public events where an army of paparazzi was expected to take photos and videos, and in one incident she was seen copying and almost mocking them by photographing and filming them. The brutally honest internet world is divided on the Roan issue, with some supporting her and others criticizing her and characterizing her as someone who refuses to take pictures with “regular people.” Are public personalities owned by the people? Or are celebrities whose careers depend on public relations permitted to say no? In the Philippines, some celebrities have faced similar controversy in the past, including the country&#x27;s leading girl group BINI requesting privacy, Choco Mucho&#x27;s volleyball stars&#x27; viral video in which they allegedly did not greet or recognize people waiting for them, and volleyball superstar Denden Lazaro&#x27;s viral video in which she was branded as a diva, which she later defended as her right to personal space. The older generation of stars would advise entertaining their followers no matter how they are feeling. The late National Artist and superstar Nora Aunor famously remarked, &quot;Mahal ko ang fans. Mahalaga ang fans. Bumaba naman kayo sa fans.” On the contrary, the younger generation of celebrities has set boundaries that are daring and impressive. While they are referred to as public personalities, the public should not bother them when they are undertaking private activities. But one celebrity was praised: Robi Domingo was once eating at a fast food restaurant after shooting episodes for a reality singing competition in Cavite and was approached for a picture, to which he graciously replied, &quot;Tapusin ko lang po ang pagkain ko. Picture tayo mamaya.&quot; And then he took a selfie. Meanwhile, Judy Ann Santos, an icon, does not constantly consider or feel compelled to ponder about fame, believing that everything does not revolve around her. “Hindi ko naikabit sa utak ko na sikat na sikat ako hanggang ngayon. Hindi ko kahit kailan sinabi sa sarili ko na, ‘Oh my God. Ayaw kong bumaba rito. Sobrang sikat ako. Baka pagkaguluhan ako.’ Nagtatrabaho ka lang. Kapag ang nasa utak mo ay nagtatrabaho ka lang, ‘yung fame ay bonus na lang,” she previously told ABS-CBN News. While there is ongoing debate online about whether celebrities should always put on happy faces to satisfy their devoted fans, setting boundaries is perfectly fine. But for personalities that can&#x27;t handle being mobbed, maybe avoid public places? Stars come and go, after all.
