MANILA — The musical stage production “Bonifacio: Ang Supremo” mounted its grand finale, bringing to life the story of revolutionary leader Andres Bonifacio through an immersive and educational performance led by playwright, director, and actor Vince Tañada.Tañada, who also portrayed Bonifacio in the production, said the musical was the culmination of decades of research and advocacy to correct historical misconceptions among Filipino youth. A lawyer by profession, he shared that he has “been studying Bonifacio for like 30 years already,” with his first work on the revolutionary figure written in 2013.He cited a survey commissioned by the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Social Weather Stations (SWS), which revealed that a majority of young respondents incorrectly believed Bonifacio was killed by Spanish colonizers.“We need to expose the youth to the truth and we need to educate the youth about history that Bonifacio was killed by our fellow Filipinos. Namatay siya sa dumi ng politika,” Tañada explained.He stressed the role of the arts in bridging gaps in historical knowledge, especially amid concerns over the reduced emphasis on “Philippine history in the basic education curriculum.”“Siguro tayo ‘yung bayan na mahilig lumimot sa kasaysayan. Hindi tayo madalas mag-aral tungkol sa kasaysayan,” he said, underscoring the production’s mission to educate through theater. “Our only weapon as artists is our arts. So, we are trying to educate young people through theater, through our art.”Actress Kanishia Santos, who portrayed Hilaria Aguinaldo, wife of Emilio Aguinaldo, described the play as both “chaotic and overwhelming,” yet engaging due to its interactive elements with the audience.Santos highlighted the physical demands of the production, noting the importance of maintaining health amid continuous performances. She also reflected on her character’s role as a moral compass, saying Hilaria taught her the value of conscience and composure “no matter how chaotic the world could be.”“Si Hilaria, tinuruan ako na mas maging, mag-isip ng conscience mo… mas maging konsensya sa lahat ng bagay,” she said.
