MISAMIS ORIENTAL - Clad in white robes, veils, and shirts, a group of barefooted elderly men and women attended the procession of Santo Entiero in Cagayan de Oro City on Good Friday.When the procession neared the St. Augustine Cathedral, the group, carrying candles, knelt on the ground and approached the church&#x27;s entrance while reciting their prayer.They stayed outside the cathedral, faced the old wooden cross and offered another round of litany prayers.This has been the decades-old practice of the group called Devotees of the Our Lady of Fatima.The Holy Week is significant to them because it was during this time when their founder, Mother Consuelo Royo, claimed experiencing an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary.In March 1975, Royo was in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur to observe the Lenten Week when an apparition of the Our Lady of Fatima supposedly gave her messages to spread to the masses.&quot;What the people saw that time was not anymore my mother, but the ethereal image of the Our Lady of Fatima,&quot; shared Royo&#x27;s daughter, Bebing Cabugnason.Since then, Mother Royo has reported more encounters with the Blessed Virgin who supposedly continues to instruct her through messages. She also became a faith healer and gained followers.In 1981, Mother Royo built the Our Lady of Fatima Chapel in Barangay Bonbon in Cagayan de Oro. She continued to preach to Marian devotees until her death on June 14, 2011. She was buried near the altar of the chapel.Royo&#x27;s followers continue to recognize her as the incarnation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.&quot;I still see the Mother [Consuelo Royo] in my dreams. She would remind me about her teachings and to spread it to other people,&quot; said 58-year-old Merlinda Rebusto, who has been a devotee for almost 40 years.Rebusto added that because of the guidance of Mother Royo, she was able to keep her family tightly knit despite problems.The Catholic Church, however, has not acknowledged the claims of apparitions and miracles of Mother Royo.The Devotees of the Our Lady of Fatima has also failed to gain recognition as a legitimate church-affiliated group.
