Runaway truck leaves 1 dead, 26 hurt in Taytay market

<p>MANILA <strong>(UPDATED) </strong>- One woman was killed while 26 others were wounded, three of whom were in critical condition, in a vehicular accident in Taytay, Rizal on Tuesday morning.</p><p>Police investigator PO3 Erwin Salvador said a 10-wheeler truck loaded with construction materials plowed through bystanders and vehicles at the New Taytay Public Market after its brakes malfunctioned.</p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/news-special1/nation/06/14/061416_taytay11_1.jpg"/><figcaption><div class="embed-desc">A runaway truck combed through stalls and bystanders at the New Taytay Public Market in Rizal province Tuesday. <em>Photo courtesy of Raul Firme</em></div></figcaption></figure></div><p>&quot;Sa inisyal po nating imbestigasyon, nawalan po umano siya ng preno at medyo mabigat itong dala niyang sasakyan kaya medyo inararo na po niya itong gawing tiyanggian sa may palengke,&quot; Salvador told radio dzMM.</p><p>Twenty vehicles, mostly tricycles, were wrecked in the accident, which happened around 11 a.m.</p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/news-special1/nation/06/14/061416_taytay3.jpg"/><figcaption><div class="embed-desc">A vehicle flips on its side after a runaway truck plowed through a market in Taytay, Rizal.</div></figcaption></figure></div><p>Salvador said the lone fatality may have been a vendor or a shopper. He said the accident left the woman&#x27;s face unrecognizable.</p><p>The truck driver, Tomas Baldonade, voluntarily surrendered to the police.</p><p>He denied that he was speeding at the time of the accident.
