<div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2016/nation/02/equirino-022916.jpg"/><figcaption><div class="embed-desc"><em>Photo by Official Gazette</em></div></figcaption></figure></div><p>The remains of former President Elpidio Quirino were reinterred at the Libingan ng mga Bayani on Monday to mark his 60th death anniversary.</p><p>It was another former president, Fidel Ramos, who said it was high time that Quirino&#x27;s remains be buried in the heroes&#x27; cemetery.</p><p>And for Quirino&#x27;s descendants, the timing couldn&#x27;t have been more perfect: 2016 is a leap year, similar to the year Quirino was first buried.</p><p>READ: <a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/lifestyle/v2/11/12/15/the-life-and-times-of-president-elpidio-quirino"><strong>The Life and Times of President Elpidio Quirino</strong></a></p><p>&quot;President Quirino was a simple man. He wasn&#x27;t rich. He started as a barrio school teacher. But he had a dream to serve this country. His poverty was never an obstacle to reaching his goal to be President of the Philippines,&quot; said granddaughter Cory Quirino.</p><p>Quirino granddaughter Ruby Quirino Gonzales hopes her grandfather, who persevered amid poverty, will be an inspiration to the youth.</p><p>In 1953, Quirino also shocked many when he granted political clemency to Japanese prisoners of war even if his own wife and three of their five children had been brutally murdered by the Japanese.</p><p>Quirino said then that he did not want Filipinos to &quot;inherit the hate for people who might yet be our friends for the permanent interest of our country.&quot;</p><p>The Philippine&#x27;s sixth president was also credited for rebuilding the country after the war and developing the economy during his administration.</p><div><strong>RE-INTERMENT AND PROTOCOL</strong></div><p>Quirino died due to a heart attack in February 29, 1956 and was buried at the Manila South cemetery.</p><p>On Monday, his remains were exhumed and was the highlight of the motorcade to the Libingan ng mga Bayani. The motorcade lasted for an hour and 20 minutes.</p><p>The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) gave a water salute to his carriage. The procession traversed Ayala Avenue, McKinley Road, 5th Avenue, Lawton Avenue, and Bayani Road to Libingan ng mga Bayani.<em> Photo by Elpidio Quirino Foundation</em></div></figcaption></figure></div><p>President Benigno &quot;Noynoy&quot; Aquino III meanwhile led the welcome and arrival honors of Quirino at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.</p><p>Protocols include giving military honors and a 21-gun salute before the casket is lowered into the plot.</p><p>An Army chopper scattered confetti over the cemetery and the burial rites ended with the sealing of the urn receptacle of Quirino.</p><figure class="op-social"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameBorder="0" height="350" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/YvG1ojrCO-M" width="510"></iframe></figure><div><strong>NOT THE FIRST REINTERMENT</strong></div><p>According to <a href="http://malacanang.gov.ph/76818-presidential-funerals"><strong>Official Gazette</strong></a>, Quirino was the third president to be buried in the national cemetery, following President Carlos P. Garcia and President Diosdado Macapagal, who was the last chief executive to receive a state funeral.</p><p>Former president Manuel L. Quezon was reinterred twice. His remains were first exhumed from his vault in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. and was reburied in the Manila North Cemetery on August 1, 1946, the second anniversary of his death. In August 1, 1979, Quezon was permanently interred at the Quezon Memorial Shrine in Quezon City.</p>
