Former police chief and now Senator Panfilo "Ping" Lacson on Friday urged Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa to punish erring cops not just through push-ups.

Dela Rosa was earlier criticized for publicly humiliating 7 policemen tagged in the illegal detention and extortion of 3 Korean tourists in Angeles City, Pampanga last month.

"Magandang mensahe, symbolic ang push-up at ang mura and everything, but it should go beyond that. Ang hinihintay ng tao, ano bang positibong aksyon aside from meting out the appropriate or commensurate punishment?" Lacson said in a statement.

Lacson said dela Rosa assured him that internal cleansing within the PNP is being done.

Dela Rosa earlier said that erring cops will be reassigned to conflict zones in Mindanao as a form of punishment.

"Sabi ko kailangan may impact. Hindi pwedeng pabagal-bagal kasi alam mo ang pulis, 'di tatablan ng pagkahinay-hinay," said Lacson.
