MANILA — Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III on Monday said Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV was sounding “like a broken record” and should press formal charges if he had evidence of alleged ill-gotten wealth of President Rodrigo Duterte and his family.Pimentel said legislators had no primary responsibility to “investigate crimes and send people to jail for their crimes,” as Trillanes sought a Senate investigation into the Dutertes’ bank accounts.“Unfortunately, this is getting to sound like a broken record,” Pimentel said in an interview to be aired on ANC’s Early Edition on Wednesday.“Kung meron talaga siyang ebidensya, be direct to the point. Go to the proper body,” he said, citing similar accusations by Trillanes also against Duterte’s son and son in law last year.Trillanes sought the investigation as Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales continued to defy Malacañang’s suspension order against her deputy, Melchor Carandang, for alleged grave misconduct.Carandang allegedly disclosed confidential information about a supposed investigation into the Dutertes’ bank transactions.Asked if the Palace or Carandang should elevate the matter to the Supreme Court, Pimentel said: “Malacañang should do something about it.”Administration critics said Malacañang might be confident of a reversal of a 2014 ruling against its disciplinary power over a deputy ombudsman, because of the close 8-7 vote then and the presence of Duterte appointees to the high court now.“Why should we worry about what can theoretically happen?” Pimentel said. “The 2014 ruling can be reversed. It can also be sustained.”
