MANILA - (UPDATED) A storm off Surigao del Sur has entered the Philippine area of responsibility Sunday night with storm signals already raised in several Mindanao areas.

State weather bureau PAGASA said tropical storm "Basyang," last spotted at 1,035 km east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, entered the waters surrounding the country at around 7 p.m.

Signal No. 1 is hoisted over Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Davao Oriental. Moderate to heavy rains are also expected in eastern Visayas and Mindanao on Monday.

PAGASA warned residents of these areas against possible flooding and landslides as the storm moves west-northwest at 27 kilometers per hour.

Basyang carries maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kilometers per hour, the state weather bureau said.

The storm has no direct effect yet on the country and PAGASA is monitoring if it will dampen Valentine's Day celebrations on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, small vessels are advised against sailing in the eastern seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao as waves of 1.25 to 4.0 meters are expected in the affected open seas.
