MANILA - A businessman killed in a gun attack on EDSA over the weekend was facing several lawsuits over bouncing checks and had also been the subject of grave threat, police said.

Two motorcycle-riding gunmen shot and killed businessman Jose Luis Yulo, 62, and his driver Allan Nomer Santos while they were on board a van on EDSA-Reliance Sunday. The victims' female companion, 38-year-old stock broker Esmeralda Ignacio, was wounded in the broad daylight attack in front of VRP Medical Center.

Senior Supt. Moises Villaceran Jr., Mandaluyong police chief, said Yulo was facing 14 complaints for bouncing checks. The slain businessman also filed a complaint for grave threat, the police official said, citing information from the court.

Police are still checking on the status of the complaints and the identity of the respondent in the grave threat raps, Villaceran told radio DZMM.

Yulo's various business ventures include real estate, gun accessories distribution and automobile, said Villaceran.

A loaded .38 revolver and 12 extra rounds of ammunition were recovered from the businessman's bag in the crime scene, he said.

"Tinitingnan namin bakit mayroon siyang baril despite ng [election] gun ban. Mayroon bang threat? Mayroon bang alam niyang nanganganib ang buhay niya?" he said.

(We are looking at why he had a firearm despite the gun ban. Was there a threat? Did he know that his life was in danger?)

Yulo's relatives will soon be invited for formal investigation while police study surveillance footage that could show the gunmen's escape route, he added.

The slain businessman is only a namesake of Chamber of Commerce of the Philippine Islands President Jose Luis U. Yulo Jr, Metro Manila police chief Director Guillermo Eleazar earlier said.
