DAPITAN CITY - The Office of the City Agriculture said it is strictly implementing the monthly ban period for shellfish in 9 of their coastal barangays.

Every month, residents are prohibited from gleaning for shellfish for at least three days, from the second quarter until the fourth quarter moon, the breeding season for shellfish.

The 3-day ban period does not only benefit marine life, it also protects sea grass, which is plentiful in the 9 barangays.

“We’re also trying to protect our sea grass which is the source of food for our fishes,” said city agriculturist Cyril Patangan.

Violators face a penalty of at least P5,000 and imprisonment of not more than six months.

Other coastal municipalities in the country rich in shellfish are also implementing the ban period.
