MANILA - The Department of Education (DepEd) clarified Saturday that students who complete 6th grade would have graduation ceremonies as part of rites for the end of the school year. This followed confusion among students and parents over a Feb. 18 memorandum, where the DepEd said only Grade 12 (senior high school) finishers should have graduation rites and be given diplomas as proof of completion.It said students in the kindergarten level, 6th grade, and 10th grade, the equivalent of 4th year high school under the old 10-year basic education cycle, should only have moving up or completion ceremonies and given certificates.<ul class="op-related-articles">	<li><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/03/01/19/graduation-rites-for-senior-high-students-only-says-deped">Graduation rites for senior high students only, says DepEd</a></li></ul>But DepEd amended this in a new memorandum issued on March 1, where it said 6th grade finishers will have graduation rites - continuing with the long-held tradition. &quot;This memorandum clarifies that the end of school year rites for Grade 6 completers for School Year 2018-2019 shall be a graduation ceremony,&quot; read memorandum, signed by secretary Leonor Briones said. DepEd also apologized for the &quot;inconvenience and confusion&quot; because of the earlier announcement. The education department issued the initial memorandum following the shift to the K to 12 (Kindergarten to 12 years) program.
