Magnitude 4.9 quake rocks Zamboanga del Norte

MANILA (UPDATE) — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake jolted Zamboanga del Norte in the southern Philippines on Tuesday night, the country's seismology bureau said.

It was first recorded at magnitude 4.7 but was later upgraded to magnitude 4.9.

The earthquake happened at 10:55 p.m., 21 kilometers northwest of Siocon town.

It was tectonic in origin and struck at depth of 34 kilometers, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Intensity IV was felt in Siocon town, while Intensity III was felt in Zamboanga City; Tampilisan, Liloy, Gutalac and Baliguian towns in Zamboanga Del Norte; and in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Intensity I was also felt in Molave, Zamboanga del Sur.

Instrumental Intensity III was also reported in Zamboanga City

The tremor is not expected to cause damage and aftershocks.
