Philippines and United Nations Women Asia and the Pacific in #Women2020 - Women in the Next Decade, Robredo, the country&#x27;s highest ranking woman in government, said her mother Salvacion GERONA taught her to become independent and empowered.Salvacion, who worked as an educator while raising her 3 children, died on Feb. 22 of a lingering illness at the age of 83.<ul class="op-related-articles">	<li><a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/02/22/20/salvacion-gerona-vp-lenis-mother-passes-away">Salvacion Gerona, VP Leni’s mother, passes away</a></li></ul>“Even when I was already Vice President, my mom would watch my interviews and she would text me, bakit nagpapa-interview ka na hindi ka man lang nagsuklay at hindi ka man lang nagpulbo (why did you go to an interview and didn&#x27;t even fix your hair or powder your face)? But my mom also knew that to truly be a woman, one has to be more than her looks,” Robredo said.The Vice President said her mother also taught her and her siblings values, such as respecting others&#x27; time as well as doing their best in all their endeavors.Her mother even drove a stick shift until she was 82, she revealed.“The most important thing I learned from her, I learned watching her as she raised us, to be empowered and always empowering, to put our best foot forward the way she did her entire life, to do good and be a little better each day in everything that we do,” Robredo said.Robredo also told her audience stories of women beneficiaries of her office’s Angat Buhay livelihood programs implemented with the assistance of their private partners.“Empower one woman and she herself will raise others with her, this is our vision, women rising together, pulling together up, shaping away at barriers together, changing conversations, sparking new fires of hope and courage and resolve within each other and freeing each other in every aspect possible,” Robredo said.
