MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday said former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas should work as a traffic aide instead, referring to an old video of the Senate aspirant managing road traffic.

In a speech in Negros Occidental, Duterte brought up the matter as he said he had no money when he ran for president in the 2016 national elections.

"You know that when I ran, I didn't have money. I didn't even have a TV advertisement during the presidential debates," he said.

"During the intermission, there were advertisements. Roxas was managing traffic. Oy Roxas, if that is the only thing that you are capable of doing, you should have worked as a traffic aide instead."

Duterte was referring to a 2009 video of Roxas attempting to manage vehicular traffic in the rain during the State of the Nation Address of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Roxas banners the Liberal Party and opposition group Otso Diretso.

He has yet to react to Duterte's latest rant against him.

In 2015, Roxas said traffic jams are caused by prosperity, money, and economic activity.

"This is a problem in a sense that arises from prosperity. Because there is money. Because there is economic activity," he said.
