Long lines
The Philippines now has 49 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Stores are reportedly running low on rubbing alcohol and long lines have been reported in grocery stores. The Palace said the public should stop panic buying and get only what we need. Health Sec. Francisco Duque told a hearing at the House of Representatives that he thinks he should have declared a state of public health emergency himself and earlier.

Speaking up
The Philippines has invoked the arbitral award it won before a UN-backed tribunal against China in a note verbale that rejected Malaysia’s claim to some areas in the South China Sea. The diplomatic note also rejected China’s objection to Malaysia’s claim. The 2016 landmark arbitral ruling demolished China’s claim over much of the South China Sea through its 9-dash line. Expert Jay Batongbacal said the note verbale on China’s response is “legally significant” and a demonstration of how the arbitral award is “properly and correctly used.”

On Tuesday night, President Duterte said POGOs are “clean.” The Senate Blue Ribbon will continue its hearing on POGOs at 11 a.m. ANC will be airing updates on the hearing.

It’s seen as an effort to prop up domestic tourism at a time when the industry has been struggling due to COVID-19. Will the President’s visit improve tourist arrivals to the island? This will be the first time the president will be visiting the island since it was closed for six months for its rehabilitation.
