MAYNILA — Sa harap ng banta ng coronavirus disease (COVID-19), nagkakaubusan ng supply ng mga personal protective equipment (PPE) para sa health care workers sa bansa.

Bunsod nito, kaniya-kaniya na ang frontliners, tulad ng mga doktor at nurse, sa paggawa ng mga improvised PPE.

Ang endocrinologist na si Monica Cating-Cabral, nakagawa ng do-it-yourself (DIY) face mask gamit ang paper towels, rubber band, at pilon cloth na bigay ng kaniyang pasyente.

"We used the fabric our patient gave us. We decided to layer it with something else, like paper towels for increased filtration and blockage," ani Cabral.

"It’s something that other people can use. It’s not meant for healthcare workers in the frontline. If you’re dealing with somebody who’s sick, you should not be using these masks," dagdag niya.

Sa Iloilo City, gawa naman sa eco bag ang mga tinahing face mask ng designer na si Binky Pitogo para sa frontliners ng Medicus Medical Center.

Paalala ni Cabral ay dapat tama ang paggamit ng mga improvised mask, at mahigpit na natatakpan ang ilong at bibig.

"Some people don’t wear them properly. It’s supposed to cover the nose and the mouth," aniya.

Bukod sa face mask, nag-improve na rin ng protective suit ang health workers sa Las Piñas Doctors Hospital, na raincoat ang ginamit.

Maging ang Department of Internal Medicine sa West Visayas State University Medical Center ay gumawa ng PPE mula sa plastic table cloth.

Namigay naman si Jose Timothy Chua, isang third-year ophthalmology resident, ng improvised face shield gawa sa plastic, foam, at tape sa frontliners sa Philippine General Hospital.

Ang mga empleyado ng kompanyang Bell-Kenz naman ay gumawa ng DIY face shield para sa frontliners.

Inamin naman ni Cabral na hindi man 100 porsiyentong epektibo ang mga DIY PPE, mas mabuti na raw ito kaysa walang proteksiyon.
