MANILA - Catholics across the Philippines marked Easter Sunday with the traditional "Salubong" rites, which celebrates the meeting of Jesus and Mary after Christ's resurrection according to the Bible.

At the San Agustin church in Intramuros, Manila, Catholics had a solemn but joyous Easter celebration past midnight.

While most churches hold the Salubong rites at dawn, the San Agustin church held the Salubong immediately after their Easter vigil.

More than a hundred people joined the Salubong.

Images of saints were paraded first around the church and were brought back for the Salubong past midnight.

There were fireworks and dancing as a celebration of Christ's rising from the dead.

Saint Andrew's Cathedral in Parañaque also marked Easter with the “Sayaw ng Kagalakan” performed by children.

At the San Antonio de Padua Church in Tansuyo, Malabon, parishioners also celebrated the Salubong past midnight.

Easter marks the end of the Holy Week, and is one of the most important dates in the Catholic calendar. - with reports from Jervis Manahan and Ernie Manio, ABS-CBN News
