MANILA - An Indonesian was rescued from the Abu Sayyaf group in the waters off Simisa Island, Banguingui, Sulu on Friday afternoon.
Heri Ardiansyah survived while his companion Hariadin died due to drowning, according to Joint Task Force Sulu.
Three bandits and their captives tried to swim across the channel towards Bangalao Island to escape from pursuing troops when they were spotted by roving sea patrollers, according to AFP Western Mindanao Command spokesperson Gerry Besana.
The military said it is pursuing other Abu Sayyaf militants trapped in Simisa Island.

A gunfight which lasted for 10 minutes resulted in the deaths of 3 Abu Sayyaf members under subleader Najir Arik.
