ILIGAN CITY - Residents of Purok 6 in Barangay Saray in Iligan City have barricaded the road to the newly built Barangay Materials Recovery Facility.The residents started their barricade Tuesday.According to the residents, they were not consulted prior to the construction of the facility.“When we asked, they only told us that they’re building a fish landing. Sometimes they tell us they’re building a school,&quot; a resident said. They only found out what it was when the structure was nearly finished.They petitioned against the use of the waste processing facility out of fear that the materials stored there will affect their health.Barangay Kagawad Nita Bolong admitted they skipped the public consultation which was part of the usual process. She said when she assumed office, the barangay was only given 15 days by the local government to build the facility.&quot;They said that we will be charged if we will not be able to deliver because the funds had long been downloaded,” she said. Prior to this, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources warned the local government against improper waste disposal.The facilities, which are intended to help in waste segregation, cost over P400,000 each.
