MANILA - The Quezon City government aims to run 4,000 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) tests by the end of the month, in a bid to arrest the contagious virus, a local health official said Tuesday.

"We want to find new cases, isolate these cases and then manage these cases. It's the only way we can flatten the curve," Dr. Rolando Cruz, head of Quezon City's Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (QCESU), told ANC.

The city government on Monday started its community-based testing against COVID-19 and have so far tested 167 people.

"When we did the pilot testing, we encountered logistics problem, but we are slowly perfecting our methods," Cruz said.

Some 65 people were tested in Quezon Memorial Circle, 6 at the Novaliches District Hospital, 56 at the Quezon City General Hospital and 40 tests were administered by QCESU.

Results are expected to be released in 4 to 5 days by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM).

As of 11 p.m. Monday, Quezon City, the most densely-populated area in Metro Manila, has recorded 942 COVID-19 cases, with 61 deaths and 64 recoveries.
