MAYNILA — Nababahala ang isang environmental protection group sa pagdami ng mga plastic na itinuturing na infectious waste mula sa ilang mga ospital sa Metro Manila.Sa survey na isinagawa ng Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) Southeast Asia sa 5 ospital sa Metro Manila, lumalabas na tumaas ang volume ng mga infectious o hazardous waste tulad ng personal protective equipment o iyung mga gloves, plastic suit, at iba pa, na ginagamit ng mga ito.Lumutang din sa infectious waste ang mga plastic mula sa pinagkainan na dapat ay nasa hiwalay na kategorya. &quot;Halimbawa, there are hospitals whose volume of waste in the pre-pandemic is about 130 bags daily. Umapela rin si San Pascual sa Department of Natural Resources (DENR) at sa mga local government unit na mahigpit na ipatupad ang batas kaugnay ng segregation ng basura.&quot;It ends up sa kalsada, and then sa ilog, at saka sa dagat. Ayon kay Geri-Geronimo Sañez, pinuno ng Hazardous Waste Management Section ng DENR-Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), tinatayang nasa 52,237.606 metric tons ang mga nakolektang health care waste mula Abril 2020 hanggang Marso 2021 sa buong bansa. &quot;The rule of thumb that we&#x27;re doing here at EMB: all waste coming from health care institution, regardless whether it comes from non-COVID ward, but if it&#x27;s generated by healthcare institution, automatic, we are considering it as COVID contaminated,&quot; ani Sañez. Sa nasabing bilang, nasa 15,229.350 metric tons lang ang na-treat, ayon kay Sañez.
